CFS Squared: Tales of CFS

Can pets develop CFS?

by laura on December 28th, 2006

sleepy charlie This is Charles. He is the family pet. He is getting older now, and his main activity is sleeping, and lying about. And sometimes, he tries to run away. I know that Charlie has moments, when he understands how bad I feel. He is my CFS kindred spirit. Sometimes, he acts like a puppy…..for instance 10 minutes before this picture was taken, he was quite energetic and very happy with his new baby (el froggy), but now look at him. So worn out!!!!

Which makes me think, could it be possible for pets to develop CFIDS? According to the Heron Veterinary Clinic of Castiglione del Lago (PERUGIA) Italy, the answer is YES!

The study comprised three related dogs with similar symptoms dominated by unexplained persistent fatigue and 5 other symptoms (muscle and multi-joint pain, sore throat, somnolence, postexertional malaise and lymphadenopathy) lasting more then 6 months. All dogs had relapsed after previous standard therapies that included several antibiotics (doxycycline, enrofloxacin,
ceftazidime, amoxacillin + clavulanic acid), imidocarb, antihelmintics, vitamins and glucocorticoids. These animals were visited in their kennel during August 1994 to perform clinical and environmental examination and to collect blood samples for haematologic and
serologic analysis. Drinking water for bacteriological examination was collected too. During additional visits, further clinical examinations were performed and blood samples were collected from the dogs at day 4, 7 and 10 after therapy.

Charlie’s symptoms could just be as a result of getting older ( I think he is 12 now), but to look at him you might think that there is a little something else going on. However, I love him…..and will always bring treats everytime I come to visit.

Awwwwww! What a cutie ptootie. My dog is 14. I’ll send you a picture one day, when I find the one I lost when computer crashed, or take a new one, whichever comes first. Bear (someone else named him and he was already 4 so I didn’t want to give him more of an identity crisis by changing his name after his people gave him away) is having some real “flare” days lately. He doesn’t get up from his bed at all, and if we make him he staggers and lays down again asap. And he yips with pain if he’s touched. He’s only had a few days like this so far.
